Previously the
communication tool of choice for college students and teenagers,
instant messaging is now helping health providers increase efficiency
and communication. MediCorp Health Care System, a not-for-profit
regional system of 28 health care facilities and wellness services in
and around the Fredericksburg, Virginia area is leveraging secure,
enterprise instant messaging to improve communication and provide an
additional avenue to important information. Not only is instant
messaging enhancing Medicorp’s communication between their employees
and health providers, Medicorp has connected their Lotus Sametime IM
environment to important hospital data systems.
Tasked with investigating solutions to enhance their IM
system, David Russell, an Information Systems Analyst at MediCorp began
investigating ways to provide information by connecting the instant
messaging system with the useful data sources, thereby enabling people
to use their instant messaging client to quickly search internal data
systems. His solution was to use Instant Agent Framework, a product by
Instant Technologies, to develop a series of Lotus Sametime IM bots to
connect useful data sources with Medicorp’s instant messaging system.
“People like cool new gadgets, and it’s even better if
those gadgets offer a business solution”, stated David Russell. “IM
bots are a hit, especially with our Executive Assistants - who need to
look up information quickly in Lotus Notes and now can even faster with
bot technology.”
Lotus Sametime bots allow for employees to use the
convenience of instant messaging to query a company’s databases. In
MediCorp’s case, they have deployed eight different bots with
functionality as varied as searching the telephone directory, to a
policies and procedures database containing everything from what to
wear to work to how much patient care an employee can give.
“When we created Instant Agent Framework, our intention
was to enable companies to quickly enhance their Lotus Sametime
environment through bot technology. The great work and ideas of David
Russell and his team at MediCorp have shown how Lotus Sametime bots can
improve communication solve real problems.” said Peyton McManus,
President of Instant Technologies.
